Dear Reader, GDR — you have almost certainly seen these three letters in a newspaper, at a trade fair, in a cinema or elsewhere and know that these three letters, GDR, are the abbreviation for German Democratic Republic — for one of the two German states which have come into existence on German territory since the Second World War. You will have different views about the GDR, according to where you live and what your special interests are. Perhaps you think of the Leipzig Fair or the Dresden Picture Gallery, of the optical products of the Zeiss Works, Dresden China from Meissen, or Plauen lace. We assume that you want to learn more about the GDR and invite you to take a short trip with us through this country. In this booklet we plan to tell you something about the industrial centres of the GDR and also about the country and its people, its landscape and places of cultural interest. Assuming that you take today's fastest means of conveyance — a jet air liner — you will first set foot on GDR soil at the central airport of Interflug (GDR airline) in Berlin-Schönefeld. Most visitors first go to Berlin, the capital of the GDR, after landing at this airport which has been extended and modernized in recent year — the planes of many foreign airlines also take off and land on its runways. Certainly you, too, will not miss the opportunity to become acquainted with the metropolis of our country. We wish you much pleasure here and during the remainder of your visit.
